Thursday 4th June: The Luck

The Luck are London-born brother and sister duo Max & Esmay Luck. They make bold, striking, harmony-fuelled Country/Americana music in the vein of their childhood heroes Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty and The Eagles. They have performed at various festivals including CarFest, Cambridge Folk Festival and Pub in the Park. They showcased at the AmericanaFest UK in January 2019, toured the UK in Spring and joined Wildwood Kin for their tour in 2019.

Friday 5th June: Midnight Skyracer

Midnight Skyracer have come a long way in a very short time. Since forming in 2017, the Anglo-Irish all female quintet have become festival sensations across the UK, Europe and Australasia, toured regularly at home and released a critically-lauded debut album. They also carry the distinction of being the first British act nominated for an award by the International Bluegrass Music Association.

Their all star lineup boasts Leanne Thorose, with her powerhouse vocals and driving mandolin; the virtuoso banjo playing and delicate vocals of Tabitha Benedict; Eleanor Wilkie and her rock solid bass grooves; the versatile Laura Carrivick, equally adept on both fiddle and dobro; and the lightning guitar playing of Charlotte Carrivick. Not only are they all masters of their respective instruments, but the vocal harmonies shared between the five women are second to none.

Following the release of Fire in February 2018, the band are set to release a follow up album this Summer on Island Records. Shadows On the Moon, recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Wiltshire, is a scintillating mix of hard-driven bluegrass and mountain balladry, both edgy and infectious, tender and tough.

“This is a band and this is an album that can go toe to toe with anything on offer from bluegrass’s spiritual home on the other side of the Atlantic.”

Saturday 6th June: Talisman

Talisman were one of the top Reggae Roots bands of the late 70s and early 80s. In those years, their prowess earnt them support acts with bands as diverse as Burning Spear, The Clash and The Rolling Stones. After thirty years apart they reformed in 2011 with two of the original line up. They have played Reggae festivals across Europe and virtually all in the UK including Glastonbury, One Love and Beautiful Days. As part of our mission to bring a wealth of musical variety, we welcome them to Newnham Live.

Thursday 11th June: Fairport Convention

Fairport Convention photographed in November 2016. The band celebrated its fiftieth anniversary on 27 May 2017.

It is our privilege to welcome back Fairport to Newnham Live. They played their first concert in a church hall in 1967, rehearsing in Simon Nicoll’s family home named Fairport. They can be attributed with the creation of folk rock reviving traditional materials with modern instrumentations and rhythms. They disbanded in 1979; but fortunately for us they reformed in 1985 and their current line up has been together for 11 years. They are the creators of the annual Summer Cropredy Festival.

Friday 12th June: The Askew Sisters

Hazel and Emily are an acclaimed English Folk Duo making waves on the folk scene with their energetic brand of English folk music. Their live performances brim with the depth and connection of two sisters, but also of two musicians who have been immersed in folk music all their lives. Together they rework songs and balladry, creating breath-taking arrangements, which allow words that are hundreds of years old to resonate profoundly with contemporary audiences.
